FDR InstantBackup Non-disruptive
Instant Point in Time Storage BackupInnovation Data Processing, Inc

Stable operation of applications thanks to online backups.

FDR InstantBackup performs backups from offline volumes created by an advanced storage subsystem, thereby minimizing application disruptions. It mitigates overall scheduling by moving the backup window from overcrowded job schedules. There is no need to shut down CICS/TSO online service, even during backups. You can remove unstable elements, such as those that perform the backup of updatable datasets.

  • ●Makes it possible to avoid long delays in the starting time for nighttime batches. At the same time, online services will no longer be delayed due to backup job overruns.
  • ●Frees you from worries about schedule adjustments, such as when a backup window has been cut back due to the installation of a new application or when a new back up job is added to an already limited backup window.

Separation of Application and Backup Operation

FDR InstantBackup heightens application continuity when combined with one of the following storage subsystems: EMC TimeFinder, HITACHI ShadowImage, IBM FlashCopy, or Sun Storage Teck SnapShot. While their implementation methods differ, all of these systems create duplicate volumes using a common method. Meanwhile, applications such as CICS, TSO, and batches can continue to use the actual data on the original online volumes.

Separation of Application and Backup Operation

Smooth Backup/Recovery Operation

The merits of backing up from offline duplicate volumes are application continuity and simple backup/restore operation. However, since performing full-volume backups every time prevents effective resource utilization, it cannot be said to be very high in operational efficiency. That is why we recommend incremental backups so that you can enjoy the merits of offline backups as well as an increase in operation efficiency.

Increased Operation Efficiency

Deploying ABR along with one of the above-mentioned storage subsystems enables incremental backups from offline volumes. Only datasets that were updated are subject to daily backups, while full backups are only made once a week. This dramatically reduces the backup window, allowing for more efficient operation compared to running full volume backups every time.

Shorter CPK Processing Time Using Instant Technology

Deploying CPK at the same time enables a dramatic reduction in CPK processing time for alleviating fragmentation on DASDs using instant technology. Executing CPK processing with the addition of the EMC COPY option yields a 20% to 40% timesavings over native-mode CPK processing for DASDs on an EMC Symmetrix storage subsystem.

Furthermore, executing CPK processing with the addition of the SNAPSHOT option yields a 70% to 80% timesavings over native-mode CPK processing for DASDs on a Sun Storage Tek SVA storage subsystem.
